A Long Winters Nap

It’s that time of year where we start to yearn for the colorful fall foliage to start greeting us in the morning.  Before you settle into your sweater and sip a cup of your favorite hot beverage, take an hour or two to winterize your yard.  Taking the time now will help your yard settle in for a long winter’s nap in preparation for springtime flowers, and optimized garden preparation.

Tackle that lawn

·         Rake those leaves up and re-purpose them as a natural fertilizer. As the leaves decompose, they will leave your soil enriched with nutrients that will help your springtime flora grow
·         Give the grass a final trim, and aerate the turf
Enrich your garden
·         Bury any remaining vegetables from your garden back into the soil
·         Remove any diseased growth from flowers and vegetables – DO NOT COMPOST

·         Remove dead growth and blossoms to discourage insect issues
·         Till the soil and add lime if necessary.  Generally the soil in this area is acidic.  You can pick up a testing kit at your local home improvement store to test your soil so you can get the pH level just right.  A pH testing kit will run you about $10.
Bushes, Trees, and Shrubs
·         Prune trees, bushes, and shrubs
·         Spread a 2-3” thick layer of mulch around the bases of trees (make sure mulch is not touching the base)
·         Leave evergreen shrubs and trees alone
Disconnect
·         Drain garden hoses and uncouple them from the house
·         Coil hoses and store in shed or garage
·         Drain irrigation system, disconnect from water source, and leave valves open slightly to avoid pressure build-up
